That is how this book came about.
I was on my way back from a taping of The Biggest Loser when I got a telephone call. It was from Ben, the partner of Olivia, who won Season 11.
AAAI am following you,AAA he told me. Pretty sure he didn’t mean he was following me, I still had to ask what on the planet he was talking about.

Ben, like Olivia about 100 pounds overweight, continued to explain: AAAIt is kind of my way to stay connected to Olivia… It is like being there with her.AAA If you are not familiar with the concept of the show, let me explain a little: While taping the present AAA’ which is a competition to see who can drop the most weight AAA’ contestants are separated from their people and all their regular routines, whilst to break all connections with their regular eating sticks. Mary have been separated from his wife for weeks by this point, and following my tweets about what we were eating made him feel a little closer.
Some weeks later, at the season finale, Ben was on hand to view and cheer for his wife, and he was visibly thinner. he had lost about 100 pounds! Anyone who’s ever dieted knows exactly what Ben meant. Currently, like never before, we are bombarded from every direction with health advice AAA’ about diet, nutrition, weight loss, exercise, natural or nonorganic, free selection or corn-fed. Now add the daily research and health-related news, a lot of which seems both stunningly clear (not being obese = good) or absurdly counter to what we thought was correct (fresh fruit juice = not so good), and you’ve got a fat case of Clutter Brain.
Clutter Brain is what happens when you hear so much details about a matter that you can not make strong, reasonable decisionsAAA’ in this case about what you should eat. It is very paralyzing, and just about every dieter knows what often comes with Clutter Brain: stress. and guess what happens that means: exhaustion, depression, and then bingeing. What elseAAA’ at least in my experience AAA’ reduces pressure and panic greater than, say, cake? a entire cake. Right? which obviously counteracts the benefits of the advice you had been seeking to follow in the first place.
So, what if we eliminated the clutter? I began to think. What if I could come up with a number of easy, nonnegotiable rules that the average Jane or Joe can follow in lifestyle AAA’ rules you can often drop back on in a pinch, rules you can use not just when you are trying to slim down, but for when you are trying to stay slender.
I’m certainly not the first guy to say this, but in our modern, information- glutted world, policies matter more than ever. Why? because our exterior setting no longer seems to have any firm boundaries, any limits, or any positive hints about when to stop eating something. I mean, there is a cause that individuals get fatAAA’ it is easy and cheap to get high- fat, tasty food. If you look at data, more Americans than ever are eating out (and eating enormous parts), eating poor junk food, consuming huge amounts of high- calorie sodas and AAAenergyAAA waters, and microwaving endless plastic platters of AAAconvenienceAAA food. all of which, while simple, will even make you fat AAA’ quickly.
But if you need to be right- sized in body, you’ve got to get rid of the supersize way of life. whether you need to lose 20 pounds or 200, what the contestants on The Biggest Loser have learned AAA’ and taught me AAA’ holds true: you’ve got to make a break. You’ve got to divorce your self from the past and find a different way of living.
And you can never go back.
Once you accept that, and know there is no finish point, then you’ve got a better opportunity of succeeding. just like Ben, who not only lowered 100 pounds but, so far, has kept it down.
But wow, Bob, you say, all I would like to do is drop 20 pounds!
No, I really do not think so. C’mon. If AAAallAAA you need to do is drop 20 pounds, you had certainly have succeeded right now, given the flood of diet publications out there, many of which are quite good.
No. If you are sitting here reading a diet book by one of the instructors on The Biggest Loser, I think you… kinda… need… anything… a little… more… than… AAAjustAAA losing some weight.
